Crosby & Nash

Live In San Francisco, 1974
Unreleased Acoustic Live Album

Excellent live show recorded Dec. 14, 1974 by ace producer/engineer, Wally Heider, and edited as a live album that would never come out. Also known as the Whale & Fieldworkers Benefit 1974 concert, there are a number of highlights, including Crosby's new (at the time) "Carry Me" and a slow, tempered reading of "Wooden Ships." These ears were most pleased to hear the fresh takes of Crosby's newest songs and the retirement of almost all of Nash's already-dated-by-1974 political material. Great sound. I prefer this version of "Carry Me" even more than the released version. The released sounded a bit 'produced' and radio-friendly, but this one knocks me out. Crosby has always been one of the most expressive singers I can name, and when he and Nash are having a good night (which they usually did...note: 1992..Guinnevere..the acoustic concert...doesn't get better than that), I would place their harmonies around the great duos, Simon and Garfunkel, Everly Brothers, Louvin Bros, Delmore Bros..right there with them. Stills and Young provided the 'soul' to csny, but these two provided the heart. Those two go together like bread and butter, and I am so happy to hear a clean live recording from early in their history as a duo...Many thanks for this one...Paul

Couldn't agree more, Paul. I had the same response to Carry Me, a tune I've always considered a rather average, post CSN number. But here, Crosby makes typically incredible use of air and space. His pauses and timing are fearless and impeccable (just listen to some of his live versions of Triad. Singing that nakedly in a large auditorium is unthinkable). I never even noticed Crosby's beautifully poetic sentiment about his dying mother on the studio version. Here, it's simply gorgeous. Crosby's one of my all time favorite songwriters (as a musician youself, I'm sure you've notice his unusual alternate tunings) and while I can take or leave Nash's songwriting chops, his partnership with Crosby was an historic win win for the both of them. Thanks as always for chiming in.

And the two of them STILL sing real good. I prefer C&N, especially live, to either CS&N or CSN&Y. Yeah, Neil is greater, but there are times when I'd rather listen to these guys. For instance, now. Thanks!
