FRIDAY MIDNIGHT Drive-In Movies @ The Boat

THE BEAST WITH A MILLION EYES (1955) This one's a stinker. Aliens that travel the universe in what looks like a coffee pot take over the brains of the local town folk and animals. Some of the locals act like they were inhabited by something alien already. Discussing the plot any more than that would be pointless. It sounds a bit like like Criswell narrating the intro. This is posted via Fancast, which take about 20 seconds to load, so be patient. New Movies Every Friday At Midnight.

Count Gore De Vol was on WTTG Channel 5 in Washington, D.C. back in the early 70's. That's where I got my fix of these movies on Saturday afternoons.
The Count encouraged fans to send in original art work of their favorite monsters which he would show on the air. My picture of Barnabas Collins made it on his show! I was one happy lil' ghoul that day.

Free flicks, that's cool. I bet you can find some that are neat to show that are public domain or out of print as well, but I wouldn't know where to look. Something different.

I was 7 yrs. old and walked home from school past the Paramount Theater, a big old-style movie house (RIP). Saw the poster for this film outside and begged my dad to take me. Of course parents knew I was too young but after much nagging, Dad did take me. It was too intense for my young mind and I had to leave before the big climax. This one and Reptilicus bothered me for years with nightmares and scary images in my head. Funny looking back but at the time I was terrified.

The Sadist is pretty damn good for a bad movie, although Arch Hall stank up everything he walked into. Nice surprise ten minutes in from the end, a few classy shots ... I get the feeling Tarantino loves this one.

Thanks, and keep 'em coming!

Back when I was a kid, Boston comedian Lenny Clark had his own Elvira-styled late night B-movie showcase, where he would do ridiculous little skits during commercial breaks. I remember seeing this movie for the first time on his show. To this day, I still find myself pronouncing the title "Invaydahs From Mahs."

We LOVE local horror movie hosts. The one we had in Tampa back in the 60s/70s was Shock Armstrong, some guy who worked at the station (Big 13) in some reporting or manangement capacity who wore a bad Frankenstein mask and a football jersey with a - you guessed it - big 13 on it.

We had Uncle Don up here in Rockford (IL). He was the weird guy that lives in everyone's neighborhood. You know, the creepy nerd that ends up being a serial killer. He played the part really well. Out of character he was a really cool guy,,, at least to a creepy nerd like me.

I'm living for the day when someone compiles a best of local horror hosts video. Thanks for commenting. Until then... there IS this place.

Very interesting, thank you.

I don't remember the girl, but the monsters scared the hell out of me back then. There's was also a serial called 'The Purple Monster Strikes' which was even more scary.

"Count Gore De Vol was on WTTG Channel 5 in Washington, D.C."

Wasn't Gore De Vol on WDCA Channel 20 in Washington DC int he early 70s?
I watched him also (AND his persona as Bozo in the early afternoon, and Capt. 20 in the late afternoon, and Dick Dyszel, for the evening movie) and was weaned on this and other great scifi classics.

Anyone notice there are no opening credits to this film?

This is great stuff...Thank You...I saw this for the first time at a double-screen drive-in. The other screen was playing some heavy R or X-rated thing and the friends father who took us there never figured out why we had no idea what was going on the Phibes movie...I was about 16 at the time...silly memories came back with this posting...

Thanks again,
D.

To paraphrase Sting & Dire Straits, I want my MST! Seriously, growing up in the Memphis area, we had the wonderful Sivad, courtesy of Fantastic Features on Channel 13 to amuse & terrify us young'uns on countless weekends in the wee dark '60's. I saw many a moonlight matinee from this rogue ghoul & loved every minute of it. Thanks to MST for the smart-ass appreciation & all the wonderful wasted moments of my mis-begotten youth! What a testimonial!

We had Bob Wilkins and Creature Features in Cali, but also syndicated episodes of The Ghoul (I think out of Cleveland). I just wanted to mention that Project Moon Base was the only time Robert A. Heinlein wrote for the movies, but they butchered his script so badly that he never did anything like that again. I notice they left in his obligatory spanking reference though...

Yay NGOOTB! :)

Willard said...

Hey Wink,
Yeah... it's no surprise Robert A. Heinlein's didn't go near movies like this again... and you certainly can't hold Project Moon Base against him. It was 1953, after all, and though there are other examples of solid sci fi movie making from those days, this one was obviously designed for lowest common denominator consumption. Thanks for the comment. I wish someone somewhere would resurrect some of the late great TV horror show hosts in one place. The time is right.

Hi There,
It's a real pity the video wont stream beyond the USA. Is there another host where we can all get in on the fun?
Steve fron Belfast

Anonymous said...

PS Thanks for all the musical appetisers,
Steve from Belfast (again)

Willard said...

Hi Steve,
Sorry to hear that... probably a Hulu copyright issue. We grab movies from a few different sources and some of them are more "official" than others. Hulu's pretty official. But some of the others are public domain movies (and usually crappier quality) that won't have those restrictions. I'll try to work in some more that might play everywhere. Thanks for the heads up.

That Ed Wood post picture scares me :) If you're into the horror Italian director: The Beyond, Gates of Hell, they have those movies at YouTube. For the Gates of Hell do a search on: City of the Living Dead 1/9 both are in nine segements. They also have House by the Cemetery, if interested. I'll have to watch this Ed Wood thing, thanks :)

Willard said...

No... sure don't. Sorry. But you're invited to drop a few hundred bucks and get it in Neil Young's Archives box. You know it's worth it.

man I just loved the cyclops..anything with lon chaney jr...why did he sink so low ?

Willard said...

My personal theory on Lon Chaney, Jr. is that he never had any chops to begin with. All due respect to his classic role(s), but even in those he always seems like he's struggling with reality. He's a riot in Cyclops, though.

sluggo said...

a riot in cyclops? man you gotta see his over the top cajun explosion in the alligator people...

Is the 'Darla Hood' in the credits the same as Alfalfa's girlfriend?

Record Fiend said...

Yes, Willard, a true classic indeed. I'll take Vincent Price over non-talent Will Smith in any movie, thank you very much. While we're talking about Price, please stop by and check out his classic "Witchcraft~Magic: An Adventure in Demonology" spoken word album over at my humble abode if you don't already have it in your obviously deep collection. Happy All Hallows' Even to you.

Willard said...

Thanks RF. As usual for stuff over at your place... I've never even heard of it before. I've got Price reading some Poe, but this sounds even weirder. Many thanks.
